For Professor Andrew Ramroop OBE, the craft of bespoke tailoring is only as secure as the next generation trained to carry it. Managing Director of Maurice Sedwell at 9–10 Savile Row and the first person of colour to own a house on the Row, he founded the Savile Row Bespoke Academy with a single purpose: to ensure that the standard of cutting, fitting and making he was taught is passed on intact rather than diluted. His commitment to education has been recognised beyond Savile Row with a professorship at the University of the Arts London, where he has helped define the highest standards attainable in the teaching of tailoring, and in 2009 he was appointed OBE for services to bespoke tailoring. At the Academy he is not a figurehead but a working tutor. As Course Director he personally teaches pattern drafting, fitting, and the diagnosis and remedy of fitting faults — the disciplines on which every bespoke garment stands or falls — and every student who trains here learns them directly from him, the same way he learned them.

Valdone brings to the Academy something rare on Savile Row: a trained educator who is also a working bespoke coat maker. She holds a First Class degree in Fashion and Textile Design and spent years teaching and mentoring at university level before training through the ARTS programme, where she learned directly from Professor Andrew Ramroop OBE. She joined Maurice Sedwell in 2024 as a coat maker. In the classroom, that combination shows. Valdone knows how to break a complex process into clear, achievable stages, how to read where a student is struggling, and how to build confidence without lowering the standard. Her students learn the hidden construction of a coat — the canvas, the padding, the stays that determine how a garment holds and moves — from someone who teaches it as well as she makes it.
